MR TV – Yes On 37: Demand GMO Labeling

MEDIA ROOTS — In most countries in Europe, it is required by law for any food company to say with a simple label that genetically modified components are used in their products. America is behind the curve and has been ever since GMO became common place. The FDA could very easily put into place a new regulation that requires the same type of labeling here, unfortunately the FDA (unsurprisingly) has bought into the propagandistic idea that labeling these products in this way would ‘hurt sales’ of these large conglomerate food companies. Buying into corporate propaganda is the best case scenario, when it’s more likely that the revolving door and collusion between the FDA and these large corporate food companies effectively makes the FDA’s job to protect them at all costs.

Most average Americans express disbelief that the FDA would allow people to consume food that hasn’t had sufficient or long term human testing, again falsely imagining our government as some sort of ‘protector’ that has our best interest in mind instead of of the interests of the rich and the powerful. In California a new proposition is being voted on in the upcoming election, Proposition 37 which simply is asking for genetically modified based food to be properly labeled as such. Go to Right To Know, the campaign to increase awareness about Proposition 37 as well as GMOs in general. Media Roots visited a protest happening at the FDA offices in Oakland, California to raise awareness about this crucial issue. Watch our field report below.

Robbie Martin on Deadline Live with Jack Blood

MEDIA ROOTS – Last Thursday co-host of the Media Roots Radio podcast, Robbie Martin was interviewed by Jack Blood on his show, Deadline Live. Everytime the anniversary for 9/11 comes around the media coverage surrounding it completely overshadows another important event, arguably equally as impacting as 9/11 that planted the seeds for the propagandistic false war on terror that continues to this very day. That event was the Anthrax attacks, referred to in American folklore as ‘Amerithrax’.

Ironically the name given to it by the mainstream media is more than telling, an attack which has now been admitted by the FBI to have been an ‘inside job’ (except they say it was the work of a lone nut, who conveniently committed suicide before they brought their ‘case’ forward), the Anthrax attacks not only made Americans feel as if ‘terror’ attacks would continue indefinitly, but the Iraq war and the new buzz word WMD probably wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the fear that a 2nd attack in the wake of 9/11 caused.

Robbie speaks about the anthrax attacks in the context of the important and devestating role it played in getting Americans to go along with torture, warrantless surveillence and indefinite premptive war. His musical imprint ‘Record Label Records‘ and the new release, Fluorescent Grey Ambiente (with 10 limited edition original paintings by Abby Martin) are spoken about briefly. Listen to the archived hour long interview from Deadline Live in the link below.

NYPD: A Homegrown Terrorist Cell

MEDIA ROOTS – In recent years, the New York Police Department has not only developed into an international police division, its officers regularly flaunt constitutionally-protected civil liberties and single-out minorities. As the “war on terror” enters its eleventh year next week, the question now is who are the actual terrorists?

Currently targeting activists with facial recognition technology, the force also uses drones in the skies and in the harbor with no sight of a horizon in this sea of surveillance. Additionally, several units regularly brutalize offenders of minor laws because of a widespread mentality that the legal code is not applicable to them.

While possibly some of America’s finest officers work on this force, it is the current state of this police culture that is of dire issue. After all, it is not only a direct threat to a peaceful and prosperous future, it is indeed the exact mindset that America has spent over a decade fighting by sacrificing well over a million human lives and having spent approximately $11,000 for every man, woman, and child in America.

AlterNet – [New York City]’s population is a little over 8 million. That means that there are 4.18 police officers per 1,000 people. By comparison, Los Angeles, the second largest city in the U.S. with 3.8 million people, has only 9,895 officers — a ratio of 2.6 police per 1,000 people.

What has the New York Police Department been doing with all that … manpower? In addition to ticketing minorities for standing outside of their homes, spying on Muslims who live in New Jersey, busing protesters, and gunning down black teens over weed, the NYPD has expanded into a massive global anti-terror operation with surveillance and military capabilities unparalleled in the history of US law enforcement.

In an email published by WikiLeaks, an FBI official joked about how shocked Americans would be if they knew how egregiously the NYPD is stomping all over their civil liberties. But what we already know is bad enough.
