Anarchist, Socialist & Libertarian Debate on Breaking the Set

Posted on by

Abby Martin highlights the disproportionate nature of the American political and media establishment, and moderates a debate between three people who represent the voices of the US’ growing political alternatives; Anarchism, Socialism & Libertarianism.

Abby talks to Scott Crow, author of ‘Black Flags and Windmills’ and founder of the Anarchist Common Ground Collective, Eugene Puryear, former vice-presidential candidate for the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and Austin Peterson, Production Director at Freedomworks and editor of LibertarianRepublic.com, about domestic and foreign policy through the lens of each separate ideology.

  1. That was one of the best debates on these topics that I have seen in a long time, maybe ever. Do it again. And, I second the inclusion of David Graeber as mentioned above.

    NICE JOB ABBY!

  2. Hi Abby,

I thought it was a good introductory debate; you can’t do very much in half an hour. (It would be great if you could get David Graeber on.) If there are plans to repeat the exercise, I’d love to see a debate specifically on free markets. My own view is that free markets are impossible, since the conditions that need to be met for a market to be truly (or perfectly) competitive, and hence free, cannot be met in the real world (things like perfect knowledge and total freedom of entry and exit, etc.). This odd idea that all participants acting selfishly to maximise self interest somehow creates the best possible society is not even falsifiable. Who can define “best possible”? And what we actually witness is monopolies and cartels throughout history. Where are the historical instances of truly free markets? If there has never been true free market capitalism, whence this blind conviction that it, and only it, is the solution? That’s a debate I’d love to see.

So, David Graeber, plus maybe Peter Joseph, plus a libertarian who believes in free markets. Oh please.

    Thank you
    Toby
