It’s rare to speak to radical activists who used to belong not only to the establishment, but to the White House.
Ramsey Clark served as Attorney General under President Lyndon B. Johnson, overseeing the Department of Justice from 1965 to 1967. During his term, he was instrumental in passing two of the most significant bills of the 20th century, the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act.
Since leaving the administration, Clark has become one of the most prominent figures leading the charge against U.S. militarism. He’s traveled everywhere from Vietnam to Iraq, where he’s thoroughly studied the devastating effects of Western sanctions on local populations.
Clark stirred up a lot of controversy in 2005 when he accepted the offer to legally represent former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein to defend the criminal charges brought against him by the US.
It was an honor to talk to him about US foreign policy, activism and the deterioration of the rule of law since his time as Attorney General.
