Monsanto, America’s Monster

MONSANTO HYPNOSIS

Last month, the University of San Francisco made an alarming discovery, that 93% of Americans tested had traces of a chemical called glyphosate in their urine. Last year, the World Health Organization deemed glyphosate a “possible carcinogen”.

Glyphosate is the main ingredient in biotech giant Monsanto’s flagship product: Roundup, an herbicide sprayed all over almost every acre of food grown. Not only has Roundup been dumped around the world more than any other weed killer in history, but the US is its largest customer. According to the US Geological Survey, a record 280 million pounds were used in 2010 alone, nearly a pound of poison for every American.

Monsanto has already proven it cannot be trusted to care about anything but money, especially when lives are at stake. In this episode of The Empire Files, Abby Martin issues a scathing exposé on the corporate polluter, chronicling its rise to power, the collusion of its crimes with the US government, and the serious danger it poses today.

Propaganda and the Engineering of Consent for Empire

PROPAGANDA BUYIt’s been estimated that an average American living in cities sees up to 4,000 ads a day. This toxic culture of mindless consumption exploits our innermost insecurities and desire to meet impossible standards. The corporate PR machine is enormously successful due to model created by a man named Edward Bernays nearly a century ago.

The nephew of Sigmund Freud, Edward Bernays is considered the father of modern propaganda, or public relations. An Austrian aristocrat, Bernays first contribution to the United States was helping President Woodrow Wilson sell the idea of World War I as a noble mission to spread democracy in Europe. In order to create the engineering of consent, Bernays argued, you must appeal to the unconscious mind.

And on behalf of numerous corporate clients, Bernays helped perfect the tools of manipulation and conditioning that are used today. To understand more about the history of propaganda and the collusion between the U.S. Empire and the fourth estate, Abby Martin sits down with Professor of Media Studies at NY University, Mark Crispin Miller, who wrote the intro to the new edition of Bernays 1928 seminal book, Propaganda.

Untouchable Big Oil Threatens All Life On Earth

octopus-monopoly600In a system that puts profits over everything, small gangs of billionaires are given free rein to plunder the planet. One of the richest power cliques in the Empire’s inner circle is also imperiling all life on earth at an alarming rate, only to make their pockets fatter.

In the United States, the oil industry is a giant, cash-engorged beast with the loyal servitude of the state at its beck and call. It’s vast accumulation of wealth led to its vast accumulation of power and influence in today’s society.

All life on Earth is threatened by catastrophic climate change–the main culprit is so powerful that the US government is set up to serve it, rather than regulate it.

In this episode of The Empire Files, Abby Martin uncovers Big Oil’s strong-arm reach–its growth, its crimes, its power and its impunity.

Featuring interviews with two investigative journalists who have covered oil disasters on-the-ground, Antonia Juhasz, author of “Black Tide: The Devastating Impact of the Gulf Oil Spill”, and Greg Palast, author of “Vulture’s Picnic: In Pursuit of Petroleum Pigs, Power Pirates, and High-Finance Carnivores”.

Adversarial Journalism in Russia & Dissecting Propaganda with Mark Ames

Screen Shot 2016-01-22 at 10.46.57 PMJournalist Mark Ames is the founder of The Exile, Exiled Online and regular contributor to Pando Daily. In Russia, he worked on the satirical, hard hitting paper The Exile with journalist Matt Taibbi from the late 90s until it was shut down by Moscow’s media censorship arm in 2008.

Ames’ history with The Exile begins with him fleeing the US at the start of the Clinton years, and heading to Russia at the end of 1993. Living in the post-Soviet Union era, he describes Moscow as being “the capital of a collapsed Empire”.

Little voices existed at the time that were speaking out about Russia being plundered blind with the assistance of the international community, specifically The United States. During the country’s neoliberal firesale, there were several assassinations of journalists and political figures, the average Russian male life expectancy went from 68 to 56, and suicide rates skyrocketed.

Despite all the horrors that transpired, the Yeltsin administration was portrayed as being fun, and jolly, and mainstream foreign reviews of his presidency were intensely positive because he posed no threat to US interests. Quite the contrast to how the Putin administration is viewed today through Western lens.

Robbie Martin of Media Roots speaks to Mark about his experience in Russia, the oft-ignored legacy of the corrupt Boris Yeltsin years after the fall of the USSR, the neoliberal pillaging of the country, and complexities of the current information war.
