Without the benefit of reviewing his findings, may I suggest that he may be missing some fundamental yet not widely known aspects of humanity, some of which we may share with alien lifeforms?
1. There is much evil going on in current human society, yet archeology suggests this may be an accident. The so-called “War System” under which we live is only a few thousand years old. 20th century discoveries suggest that ancient civilizations (10,000 or more years ago) were much more loving, much more knowledgeable, and also—this could be anathema to Hawking—much more spiritual, communing intensely with the Divine through telepathy and spiritual healing. Apparently, humans would have degraded their spirituality and their knowledge, then fallen into the “War System.” Some spiritual researchers have proposed that some mysterious earthly rulers may even have spent great energy hoarding spiritual malevolence and would still be using it today as a weapon, incapacitating their “enemies,” keeping their “friends” in line, and maintaining the whole planet in a climate of fear.
2. A reverse truth is that in order to expand and prosper, a civilization would be well advised to align itself with the Divine purpose. Telepathy, spiritual healing, and the emerging knowledge of the “Web Of All Existence” our universe seems to be a small part of lead us to such an alignment. Based on the human experience, it is likely that a pre-requisite for a civilization to be capable of exploring and colonizing the whole universe is its alignment with the Divine purpose, with Divine love as its main guiding feature and a prominent source of knowledge.
3. There are reasons to believe that the human culture is actually making spiritual strides, in parallel with its fast-paced scientific progress. As physicists understand the cosmos and subatomic particles ever better, spiritual healers are making ever more powerful tools to contain the above-mentioned reservoirs of spiritual malevolence, defang the sorcerers that have kept humanity under malevolent spells for ages, and goad our mysterious pathocratic rulers to renounce evil.
